By Divya Bhati: The current economic slowdown is literally shaking the biggest global tech giants. Companies like Amazon, Meta and Twitter, which are known to provide the best work culture and employee benefits, slashed off thousands of employees to thrive amid the adverse macroeconomic conditions. But things are not stable yet. Amazon, which started the biggest ever lay off in its history on Wednesday, will continue to cut down its global workforce in the coming months of 2023.

Amazon has reportedly laid off employees from its top departments, including the Alexa voice assistant division, and sent voluntary buyout offers to its human resource employees. And now in the official public statement, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has confirmed that the company will continue laying off more of its employees in the coming year.

“Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means there will be more role reductions as leaders continue to make adjustments. Those decisions will be shared with impacted employees and organisations early in 2023,” said Jassy in his first public statement on layoffs.

Jassy further noted that the company has not determined yet on how many employees will be laid off but there will be workforce reductions from “Stores and PXT organizations”. The company will be informing the impacted employees early next year.

Earlier, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, Dave Limp also issued an official note on ongoing staff reduction in the company. “We recently decided to consolidate some teams and programs. One of the consequences of these decisions is that some roles will no longer be required,” he wrote.

While it was reported that Amazon will be laying off 10,000 employees, no exact number on total job cuts was shared by Limp and CEO Jassy. Notably, Amazon has given employees a 2-month time period to find a new role within the company as the tech giant is consolidating teams and programs. In case the employee fails to find a new role, the company will offer a severance package based on tenure.
