Aviation disaster: In a horrific incident, a Turkish plane skidded off the runway at a coastal airport stopping just metres short of the sea! On Saturday night, a Pegasus Airline flight carrying 162 passengers skidded off the runway at the Trabzon airport in northeast Turkey and ended up halfway down a steep slope into the Black Sea. Pegasus Airlines said in a statement that the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, flying from Ankara to Trabzon, “had a runway excursion incident” as it landed but the 162 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew were unhurt. The pictures that have been going viral on social media show the plane stuck at a mind0boggling angle on the steep decline on a muddy embankment with the plane’s nose close to the water’s edge. That was the lucky moment for the passengers who were saved as the plane stopped at the edge of the Black Sea. Emergency workers then started the rescue operation and all went well thereafter. However, passengers had gone through some fearful moments as they watched the plane overshoot and then plunge sickeningly downwards.

As per a Daily Mail report, shocking footage from inside the Pegasus plane shows that it took just moments after the crash for passengers to evacuate it even as women and children are heard crying out in fear. The scale of the tragedy could have been much worse as it was clearly seen that the aircraft’s left jet engine was ripped from the wing during the crash. Stewards were heard addressing passengers over a loudspeaker system. Even more fear was created, dramatic footage showed, when smoke started billowing from the cabin. Another clip taken from outside the aircraft showed fire services dousing the plane with jets of water. However, from the video, there is no suggestion of there having been a fire. More footage showed passengers gathering near the wing of the plane on the steep slope down to the water.

One of the passengers, Fatma Gordu, said panic erupted onboard during the landing.”We tilted to the side, the front was down while the plane’s rear was up. There was panic. People shouting, screaming,’ she was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail. The flight departed from Ankara, Turkey’s capital, on Saturday evening. But on landing at Trabzon Airport, just under 90 minutes later, the plane left the runway. The airport was temporarily shut before reopening on Sunday morning. Pegasus Airlines is a Turkish budget airline based in the Kurtkoy area of Pendik, Istanbul.
