Well before Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol to welcome his Israeli friend PM Benjamin Netanyahu with a warm embrace at the Delhi airport, the Opposition attacked the leader and called his hugs ‘awkward’. The Indian National Congress (INC) earlier today shared a video on their social media account to take a dig at PM Narendra Modi with a caption saying, “With Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu visiting India, we look forward to more hugs from PM Modi! #Hugplomacy.” The video soon went viral and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to hit back. Not long after the release of the video, in fact, both Congress and BJP were engaged in a verbal duel too.
National Spokesperson of BJP, Sambit Patra took to Twitter to reply on behalf of the party. He shared a post saying, “Never expected India’s main opposition party to post such a tweet ..that too when a respected Foreign PM has just arrived! Congress President only talks of winning by LOVE ..while this is what Indian PM is doing..winning the WORLD by LOVE! While Modi WINS you Whine!!”

While talking to the media, Sambit Patra said, “This is not the way you talk about Indian Prime Minister.” BJP’s Nalin S Kohli supported Sambit said, “It is an absolutely despicable video. It is making fun of honourable PM of India with other global leaders.”

Narendra Modi is known for his warm embraces, in what has been uniquely termed as hug diplomacy, while welcoming other world leaders or even while he is himself being welcomed by others in others homeland. The video by INC was released on the day, when the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu kick started his 6 day trip to India. He was received by PM Narendra Modi at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, and he broke official protocol to receive him there to reciprocate the gesture that was shown by PM Netanyahu himself back in July 2017 when the Indian PM had gone there. The meeting of the two leaders was full of smiles and affection. Netanyahu is the second Israeli PM to visit the country in 15 years.
