Lashing out at US President Donald Trump for his “sh**hole” remark against African countries, former India-born US Attorney Preet Bharara on Saturday said the comments were “naive, low-class, unamerican and racist.” Bharara maintained he has a patriot’s faith that America is the “best” country but questioned Trump’s remark. Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, he wrote, “I have a patriot’s faith that America is the best country. For me, this is informed by evidence (and my parents’ trek from India). That doesn’t mean our PRESIDENT should call any other country a shithole.” Bharara continued his tweet in an apparent strident manner against the US President. He wrote, “That’s wrong, naive, unhelpful, stupid, low-class, unamerican & racist.”

Born in Firozpur, India, Preet Bharara has a reputation of being a crusader prosecutor. During his tenure, he was one of the most aggressive and outspoken prosecutors against public corruption. Bharara, in fact, prosecuted nearly 100 Wall Street executives for insider trading and other offenses. He was posted at US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Trump has offered a denial saying, “The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!” He was criticised globally. The United Nations slammed the reported remarks as “shocking and shameful” and “racist”.

In a series of tweets, the US president also clarified that he, “Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said “take them out.” Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!”

Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for AU chief Moussa Faki, said the comment was “clearly” racist. “This is even more hurtful given the historical reality of just how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, and also terribly surprising as the United States remains a massively positive example as just how migration can give birth to a nation,” Kalondo added.

Earlier this Friday, US Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who attended the DACA meeting gathering, told reporters that Trump used “vile, vulgar” language, including repeatedly using the word “shithole” when speaking about African countries.
