Mahindra has officially introduced the XUV400 EV in the Indian market. This is not the brand’s first electric car in the Indian market. The XUV400 EV is based on XUV300 and is not based on the new INGLO-based electric SUVs that Mahindra unveiled a few weeks ago.
The Mahindra XUV400 EV gives an early entry to Mahindra before the Born-Electric platform-based cars come to the market. Since the all-new XUV400 is based on the XUV300, you will find the same design language with a few minor electric vehicle focussed changes. With the XUV400, Mahindra has added new bright blue paint that will not be available with the XUV300.

Talking about the overall design of the XUV400, Mahindra has made extensive changes over the XUV300. At the front, the XUV400 does away with the slat-themed grille for a closed grille, which features bronze-coloured X-themed inserts across its width. The headlamp housings look the same with halogen projectors within them, with the daytime running LEDs present on the outer edges of the headlamps. Here, the daytime running LEDs do not stretch down to the front bumper, which now gets bronze accents around the new fog lamps. The front bumper here looks inspired by the new-generation ‘born-electric’ SUVs.
The Mahindra XUV400 looks the same as the XUV300 till the B-pillar, with it having a longer wheelbase and wider rear three-quarter design. The wheelbase here is rated at 2600mm, with the electric SUV measuring 4200mm long and 1821mm wide. The XUV400 gets a squared theme for the front and rear fenders and a new design for the 16-inch machined alloy wheels.
The side profile also gets bronze accents on the lower part of the door panels and a blacked-out C-pillar, which looks wider than that of the XUV300. The roof is painted entirely in a theme of bronze, while the rearview mirrors are in a theme of gloss black. The front fender on the left gets the charging port mounted on it. The rear profile of the XUV400 gets tweaked headlamps with sharper edges and revised LED inserts, as compared to the tail lamps in the XUV300. The boot lid also looks revised over the XUV300, with the new twin-peaks logo and ‘XUV400’ badge finished in bronze.
Similar cabin
On the inside, the cabin of the XUV400 looks similar to that of the XUV300, with the entire dashboard design looking the same. However, the cabin here is finished in an all-black theme, with gloss black surrounds for the centre console and bronze surrounds for the side AC vents. The layout for the centre console with the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, buttons for the dual-zone automatic climate control, multi-functional steering wheel and twin-pod instrument console looks the same as those in the XUV300. However, the instrument console here gets a new TFT MID, which offers different EV-specific information. Mahindra claims a boot space of 378 litres, which is much more than that of the XUV300.
Mahindra has equipped the XUV400 with tech-focused features, including more than 60 connected car features with smartwatch connectivity, smart route planning features, machine learning-based driving charging recommendations, over-the-air software updates, etc.
The Mahindra XUV400 gets an all-new powertrain with a front-mounted electric motor, which produces 310 Nm of maximum torque output. The powertrain here is complemented with three drive modes, with the XUV400 capable of covering the 0-100 kmph sprint in 8.3 seconds. The IP67-certified 39.4 kW battery pack of the Mahindra XUV400 claims a maximum range of 456 km (MIDC certified).
