India is aiming to augment the domestic production of anti-viral Remdesivir injectable formulation to at least five lakh vials by August with the authorities coming down heavily on black marketers of the medicine, currently seen as a life-saver.
As Covid count reached 7,42,417 today after a daily spike of 22,752 cases, the government sent out clear directives to three domestic Remdesivir manufacturers — Hetero Drugs, Cipla and Mylan Labs — to upload their stock situation, supply and distribution chain details for the Centre to monitor. The government had received complaints that one Remdesivir vial priced at Rs 5,400 by Hetero Drugs was being sold on the black market anywhere between Rs 15,000 and Rs 60,000. “The supply situation on Remdesivir front will soon ease,” said a government source.

The study said that the top 10 countries with high infection rates at the end of winter 2021 would be India, followed by the US, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Turkey, France, and Germany. The projections are highly sensitive to assumed testing, behavioural and policy responses. — PTI
