After a series of electric scooters caught fire in India recently, a Tata Nexon EV caught fire in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The incident was caught on the camera and is widely shared on social media platforms. The exact reason for the fire remains unknown. However, Tata has released an official statement ensuring a thorough investigation.
The video by a pedestrian shows the Tata Nexon EV engulfed in fire. The vehicle was parked outside a restaurant in Mumbai’s West Vasai area. Cops and fire tenders were on the spot to regulate the fire and bring the raging fire erupting from the vehicle under control. The fire tenders controlled the enraging fire but the exact reason for the Nexon EV catching fire remains unknown.

Tata Motors released an official statement saying that the company will conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident. Tata Motors will release the details of the incident after completing the investigation.

Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal who came under fire for a fire incident involving Ola S1 Pro and then reliability issues with the new scooter also posted a tweet on the incident. He wrote that electric vehicles catching fire is not uncommon and a few of them have been reported globally too. He also maintains that such incidents are much rarer in electric vehicles compared to ICE vehicles.
While Tata is yet to find out the exact reason for the fire, it should be noted that the Tata Nexon EV remains the best-selling electric car in India. There can be various reasons behind the fire. It includes short-circuiting, problems with the battery management system, and overcharging are the only few reasons. In the past, we have seen a number of electric scooters from different brands catching fire on the roads.
The Indian government asked the DRDO agency to investigate the scooter fires and come up with solutions to reduce such incidents. Electric car fires have been rare in India. In fact, this is the first-ever Tata Nexon EV to catch fire in India.
Tata recently introduced the new Nexon EV Max with an extended range. The new vehicle gets a larger battery and can do a claimed range of 437 km. Tata also sells the standard version of the Nexon EV in the Indian market. The standard version of the Tata Nexon gets a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and it gets a range of 312 km on a single charge. Tata also offers Tigor EV in the Indian market.
