WhatsApp latest features: Delete messages, low data mode, call waiting

WhatsApp constantly keeps updating its software to include a bevy of features to provide smooth messaging and call experience to its users. Some of the features are still under development while a few have been rolled out as stable updates for both Android and iOS users.

We bring to you some of the latest updates that were rolled out during in this week:

Disappearing messages feature:

Although first spotted by WABetaInfo, a blog that tracks WhatsApp developments, earlier this month, the blog recently stated the ‘Delete Messages’ feature has also arrived in iOS beta version of 2.20.10.23 and 24.

The blog confirmed that this feature will be available for group chats and only accessible to administrators. The feature, once available, will automatically delete messages after a particular time period set by the user and make it look like the message never existed.

Moreover, the blog in its publication stated that WhatsApp is bringing this feature as a sort of “cleaning tool” for groups.

“Groups have usually a lot of messages and this feature could help to save your phone storage, deleting old messages automatically (only administrators will be able to enable/disable it),” the blog stated.

Once available, the ‘Delete Message’ feature will come with a toggle on/off button and users can choose a particular time interval for the messages to automatically disappear. There are five options for time intervals to choose from – 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year. Accordingly, the messages sent to that chat will disappear. For instance, if the user opts for 1 hour time interval, the messages sent post-selection will be deleted after an hour.

However, it is important to know that there is no official announcement as to when this feature will roll out. Similarly, there’s also no word on Dark Mode release date either, and this feature has been under development for a long time now.

Low Data Mode:

This is a fresh update for iOS users. Earlier, the low data usage feature was only available during WhatsApp calling, but now it has integrated the feature on the app itself. This feature will reduce the amount of the instant messaging app’s network data usage.

Low Data Mode will also stop to auto-download voice messages (WABetaInfo)

How will low data mode work on WhatsApp:

According to the blog post, once you enable the mode, WhatsApp will automatically stop to download media from cellular, even if you have configured different auto download settings. Low Data Mode will also stop to auto-download voice messages. This is a brand new feature that will help users to access the app for messaging purposes even in weak internet areas.

Call waiting:

WhatsApp earlier this month had rolled out an important and useful call waiting support for both its users.

The new feature entails the option where users will now be able to receive another WhatsApp call while they are already on one call. The feature can be downloaded by updating the app on App Store for iPhone users and Google Play Store for Android customers.

Earlier, the receivers didn’t get a call waiting notification if they were already on another call and instead, it would notify the user of a ‘Missed call’ once they disconnected the current call. On the other hand, the caller got to know that the receiver is busy as the app flashed the message ‘on another call’ when the caller would try calling.
