NEW DELHI: Mercedes-Benz India on Wednesday the third generation of GLS SUV in diesel and petrol options, starting at Rs 99.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
GLS, also touted as the S-class of SUVs, was first rolled out in India in 2010 through CBU route. In 2013, Mercedes-Benz started local assembling at Chakan plant in 2013.
Dimensionally, the seven-seater SUV has grown in size, with additional 77 mm and 22 mm increase in length and breath. This has resulted in greater comfort inside, with greater legroom for middle row passengers.
On design front, there are not any significant changes, however, the front grille has been beefed up and the headlight cluster now gets an array of 112 LEDs, which have a throw up to 650 mm. Similarly, the rear light cluster has also been slightly reworked. GLS also sits on larger 21-inch alloys now.
The state-of-the-art interior is luxurious and well-appointed. The technology and innovation applied are class-leading. Mercedes-Benz India, fondly, calls GLS as Powerbank on Wheels, thanks to 11 USB ports and two wireless charging options provided across the length and breadth of the SUV.
On the features front, GLS gets a large, sliding panoramic sunroof, 13-set Burmester sound system, 5-zone air conditioning with charcoal filter, tablet in middle row to control car parameters, dual 12.3-inch display, Napa leather-wrapped steering wheel, among the exhaustive list.
Much like the 2020 GLE, Mercedes-Benz GLS comes in BS6-compliant petrol and diesel engine options. The 3-litre, 400d 4Matic engine is good enough for 330PS and 700Nm. On the other hand, M256, in-line six, 3-litre, petrol motor gets mild-hybrid technology, which generated 367 PS and 500Nm.
Safety features include active park assist with 360-degree surround view camera, driver assistant system with blind spot-assist and active brake assist, 9 airbags, downhill speed regulation (DSR), off-road ABS and car wash function.
Earlier known as GL, Mercedes-Benz India has sold over 6,700 units in the last 10 years. Mercedes-Benz GLS competes with the likes of BMW X7, Volvo XC90 and Audi Q8.
