AMU professor’s job for PhD scholar who lost hand

AGRA: Days after Mohammed Tariq, 26-year-old chemistry research scholar lost his hand in the violence that rocked AMU campus on December 15, the varsity authorities have appointed him as an assistant professor in Chemistry department on ad hoc basis.

On Sunday, TOI had highlighted the plight of this young man, who hails from a very poor family in Firozabad, with his father and elder brothers working as daily wage labourers. In fact, he was the only educated member of his family and had been hoping to support his father, an ailing mother and six siblings. Having been maimed, Tariq was staring at a bleak future and had lost all hopes of fulfilling his dreams.

AMU vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor said that the university took a humanitarian view of his condition and family circumstances and decided to appoint him as assistant professor on ad hoc basis.

“I could have done better than this but the recent accident changed my whole life,” Tariq told TOI.
