GUWAHATI: Assam Director of General of Police (DGP), Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that Assam police is part of the team interrogating Sharjeel Imam, one of the key organizers of the Shaheen Bagh protests in New Delhi.
Mahanta told the media that Sharjeel will be brought to Assam after a warrant is produced.
He was arrested in Bihar on charges of sedition and spreading communal hatred.
The Assam government has already registered a case against Imam for his remark to the effect that the main goal of the Shaheen Bagh protest is to cut off the Northeastern states from the rest of the country.
Earlier, Assam’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh had said, “An FIR has been lodged against Sharjil Imam for his speech and inter alia commission of offence u/s 13 (1)/18 of the UA(P)ACT read with section 153 A, 153 B and 124 A IPC at Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station.”
