Mumbai: Tata Motors’ upcoming premium hatchback Altroz becomes the first made-in-India small car to have received 5-star adult safety rating from Global NCAP or Global New Car Assessment Programme, an agency which works in the area of motor vehicle safety.

The five-door hatchback, which is scheduled for commercial launch on 22 January, becomes the second passenger car from the stable of Tata Motors to have received 5-star adult safety rating in the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. The only other locally manufactured passenger car that has received a similar adult safety rating is the Tata Nexon, a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV). It had received similar rating in December 2018.

The model that was put to crash tests was a right hand drive (RHD) variant equipped with two airbags. In an official statement, the company said that the Altroz, which has also received a 3-star child occupant safety rating, was crash tested for the front and side impacts.

“The combined evaluation of both the tests by Global NCAP has resulted in a full 5-star rating. Altroz has also achieved a notable 3-star for child occupant safety,” the statement said.

“We hope that achievements such as this one would elevate the trust in our badge among the Indian car-buyers and continue to prove Tata Motors as a brand associated with class-defining products,” said Mayank Pareek, president, passenger vehicles business unit (PVBU), Tata Motors Ltd.

Global NCAP has carried out more than 35 car crash tests and their respective safety assessments, which the agency claims to have contributed in the awareness about safety features in the passenger cars. Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Etios, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Volkswagen Polo, Tata Zest are the other passenger cars have earlier received four-star adult rating from Global NCAP. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Ford Aspire, Renault Duster and Honda Mobilio were the other models that had received 3-star adult safety rating.
