Tata Motors’ Pratap Bose – who designed Nexon, Harrier, Safari & Altroz – Quits – CarToq.com

Pratap Bose is a well-known person in the Indian automotive industry. He was the Vice-President, Global Design for Tata Motors. Surprisingly, he has just resigned from Tata Motors. He was the person behind vehicles like Tiago, Nexon, Harrier, Safari etc. All of which did fairly well in the Indian market. Pratap designed the “IMPACT 2.0 Design” Philosophy for Tata Motors on which the new cars were based. The new design language has been received very well throughout the automotive industry.

Pratap Bose was also nominated for World Car Person of the Year 2021. He has been in Tata for the past 14 years and was promoted to Vice President, Global Design in January of 2019. He has worked on three design centres located in Turin(Italy), Pune and Coventry(UK). He was leading a team of 180 employees. He completed his master’s degree in vehicle design from Royal College Art, London, U.K and a graduate degree from the National Institute of Design.

Before Tata Motors, Pratap has worked in other automotive giants like Mercedes-Benz, Piaggio and Mitsubishi. An internal statement by Tata Motors says, that Pratap Bose has decided to leave for better opportunities. So, it could be assumed that he will be heading to another automotive manufacturer. We would just have to wait for official news to know which company he joins. The internal statement also said that Pratap will be on leave for the remainder of his tenure. From now, Martin Uhlarik will be the Global Head Design for Tata Motors.

Mr. Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD, Tata Motors, said“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Martin Uhlarik as the new Global Design Head of Tata Motors. Martin is an experienced automobile designer with deep domain knowledge of design, keen understanding of international trends and extensive operational experience with leading automobile companies in several geographies.  His rich experience and expertise will inspire our teams to further enhance our vehicle design philosophy and language. I take this opportunity to also thank Pratap for his services and wish him the best for the future.”

The recent cars from Tata Motors were very well appreciated by the customers because of their new design language. It was modern and helped in attracting more people while offering a good road presence. Tata’s vehicles also had some small easter eggs throughout the vehicles. Tiago is still one of the best looking small hatchbacks in our market. When Harrier was launched, it amazed everyone with its road presence and butch SUV styling. The Harrier is still one of the best looking SUVs in the Indian market. Then they blended the Harrier’s styling with the Safari and launched the 2021 Safari which has a huge road presence on the road. The same story is true for the Nexon also. When the Nexon was relaunched last year, the sales of the compact SUV went up quite a bit. One of the reasons being the updated front-end styling which resembled a lot to Land Rover Discovery. Tata Motors also entered the premium hatchback segment last year with the Altroz which has attracted most of its customers because of its design which has been inspired by Albatross.

Tata Motors is currently working on a bunch of new vehicles. They will be launching the electric version of the Tiago and Tigor. The Nexon is expected to get launched with a Dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Altroz would also get the same transmission soon. They are also working on a micro-SUV which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 as the HBX Concept. The manufacturer has already updated the Harrier last year and their most recent launch was the Safari. Tata Motors has been able to increase the domestic sales by 21% over Q3 FY21 and by 94% over Q4 FY20.
